Back to the firing squad? #deathpenalty

The timing was a bit of a surprise–late in the day Monday–but not the news: unable to find legal supplies of lethal injection drugs, Ohio is postponing executions for another full year. Having last put someone to death in January 2014, the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction won’t try again until January 2017, assuming it has drugs to do it with. Presumably, Ohio is looking domestically at compounding pharmacies willing to mix specialty batches (the solution Texas achieved). It’s also trying an overseas approach, hoping to persuade the FDA to let it import drugs. In the meantime, lawmakers impatient with the delays are pointing out other options, from heroin to the firing squad. As one legislator told me for my latest story on the dilemma: “We’ve got plenty of electric and plenty of rope.”
