“Mad Max: Fury Road” and…?

We watched the “Mad Max” reboot recently, “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and Pam and I had nearly the same reaction: What would Anne do? That’s Anne as in Anne Cooper, the girlfriend of my fictional private eye, Andy Hayes. And that’s do as in: how would Anne, an English professor who specializes in science fiction, incorporate the movie into her teaching? It’s a post apocalyptic film with a strong feminist streak, and so the first companion piece we thought of was Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale.” There’s also hints of P.D. James’s “Children of Men” and of course, “Terminator 2,” or more specifically, Linda Hamilton’s performance as Sarah Connor. So here’s the question: if you were designing a Sci-Fi curriculum for Anne focusing on post apocalyptic books and movies with female heroes, what would be on the list, and why?

  1. I have to go with Stephen King’s “The Stand”. From there, take your pick of characters from Mother Abagail (Leader of the Good) to Julie Lawry (not so good…)
